Writing in the Form of Music

I’m not sure if this pertains to every single author out there but I know that a lot of us have to write with some sort of music playing. It sparks feelings and emotions and we often throw a track on repeat so that we can hold on to that feeling while we write. Some of us have to listen to instrumental tracks, some of us have to listen to older music, big band, swing, (in my case) indie, pop, rock, and all of the other genres because they spark that feeling of lose, hate, lust, friendship or whatever other emotions we are trying to capture. I love finding the perfect track to get into Harper’s mindset for the different chapters, and as you can see if you go to the Playlist page I have a lot of tracks that help me.

What is your favorite genre to write to? What songs help you the most when it comes to your characters?

I find that heavy rock and metal helps me write the best, sometimes I dip into the past to 90’s music though. It really depends on what I’m writing, because I’ve even used country as inspiration before, as well as some Sting, and other older music. Pacabel’s Canon is one of my all time favorite pieces though, and has helped with a lot of my writing. As has Christoforie’s Dream by David Lanz.

Where I am with the book I am using indie music, typically when I have to write a scene where my characters are supposed to be tough I will use a range of rock/metal. Isn’t it great how music can spark those emotions in us, though? I love it

I really love getting inspired by music, and I love how it can get me going on any plot line. Typically, when I have Writer’s Block, if I listen to music I haven’t listened to in a long time, it clears up pretty quickly. What are some of your favorite artists?

I have a wide range at the moment. I have been listening to a lot of Twin Atlantic, There for Tomorrow, We are the In Crowd, The Lumineers, Jack’s Mannequin, and Imagine Dragons. When I get into a fight scene, I listen to a lot of Alkaline Trio, Disturbed, Skrillex, The Distillers, Kid Cudi… Those are really who I can think off the top of my head. I mostly turn on a rock or metal station on Spotify and let it run.

There is also a lot of J-Rock and K-Rock in there. I blast Imaginary Flying Machine a lot of the time as well
